About Cathy Armstrong, MS, LPC-S, RN
Cathy Armstrong has developed a unique practice that draws from her extensive background in integrated faith, cultural diversity, traditional Chinese medicine, and the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda. She incorporates nutrition and specialized mental health counseling to address chronic illness, reproductive mental health, addictions, and women’s specialty areas. Cathy also focuses on healing trauma, PTSD, anxiety disorders including hoarding and OCD, family violence, emotional, physical, spirituals, sexual abuse, inner child healing, codependency, weight loss failure, and binge eating. Her comprehensive approach offers a holistic path to wellness for her clients.
Integrative DBT and the exploration of yoga and Ayurveda
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and the practices of yoga and Ayurveda can complement each other effectively in addressing anxiety, trauma, Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), and mood-related eating disorders.
DBT, developed by Dr. Marsha Linehan, is a cognitive-behavioral treatment that emphasizes the balance between acceptance and change to help individuals manage emotional distress. It includes four core components: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. These skills help individuals navigate intense emotions and improve their relationships and overall mental health.
Yoga, with its emphasis on mindful movement, breath work, and meditation, aligns well with DBT. The mindfulness practices in yoga help individuals stay grounded, reducing anxiety and promoting a sense of calm. The physical component of yoga can also help release stored tension from trauma, creating a sanctuary for healing and self-exploration.
Ayurveda, known as a sister science to yoga, offers dietary and lifestyle wisdom tailored to individual constitutions (doshas), enhancing physical and mental harmony. Its holistic approach considers diet, daily routine, and environment, addressing not just symptoms but root causes. Through tailored Ayurvedic practices, individuals can discover balance in mood, digestion, and overall well-being, providing support for those with eating disorders by fostering a healthier relationship with food. Free educational workshops are offered monthly for clients showing interest.
By integrating DBT with yoga and Ayurveda, individuals with anxiety, trauma, BPD, and mood-related eating disorders can gain insightful tools to foster self-awareness, emotional balance, and physical health. Together, these practices provide a comprehensive path to healing, nurturing not just the mind but the body and spirit as well.
